how about this. cabling used to signal the status of breakers and switches, or to trip a breaker.

some circuit breakers are smart these days. you might have an ethernet or modbus cable going to a circuit breaker.
That's pretty much what I was thinking... breakers can signal each other for selective coordination - a downstream breaker that sees a fault tells an upstream breaker "Don't trip yet - give me a chance to handle this."
Also some of the arc flash sensors and interlocks might also have some data wiring.
