I get asked all kinds of questions.

Dormitory building has CO detectors in boiler room.
The inspection requires they be tested, (Not sure if it's the AHJ or insurance company.)

What is the approved way to test same?

What is the approved way to test same?
The approved way to test CO detectors in a dormitory building's boiler room may vary depending on the specific requirements of the AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) or insurance company. However, in general, the following steps may be taken to test CO detectors:

  1. Notify occupants: Prior to testing, notify the occupants of the building, including any staff or residents, that a test will be conducted and that the alarm may sound temporarily.
  2. Locate the detectors: Locate all CO detectors in the boiler room, and determine if they are hardwired or battery-operated.
  3. Test the detectors: Test each detector according to the manufacturer's instructions. This may involve pressing and holding a "test" button on the detector for a specified period of time, or using a canister of CO gas to simulate a real-life scenario. Be sure to use a test kit approved by the manufacturer.
  4. Verify the alarm: Once the detector is activated, verify that the alarm sounds and that it is audible in the boiler room as well as adjacent areas. If the detector is monitored, verify that the signal is received at the monitoring location.
  5. Document the results: Record the date, time, and results of the test for each detector. If any detector fails to operate correctly, repair or replace it immediately.
