Where would you put it when kitchen is the room adjacent to the bedroom?

IMO if the door goes straight from the kitchen to the bedroom with no hallway or other "break" it should be just outside the door. Someone with more knowledge of the codes will chime in soon and give you the spec's.

If you can't place it in a hallway adjacent to the sleeping area, I'd put it in the bedroom. If you have multiple bedrooms, I'd install one in each.
