What classification would a coal processing facility fall under? The area is not in the mine shaft - on the surface.

Looking to install CCTV to view conveyor and processing equipment. Definatly want the install to be compliant.

They have cheapo cameras with exposed wiring connections now. I think they should be explosion-proof, dust tight, and rigid conduit even though they are low voltage. The cameras will operate at 24 VAC.

When present in particles small enough to create an explosion hazard (420 microns or smaller) coal is Class II, Group F. A visible dust cloud or a layer of dust at least 1/8? thick indicates Division 1. Typically, 10? beyond Division 1 in the direction away from the source is Division 2.

If coal dust, 1/8? thick or more, hasn?t accumulated on the existing cameras, it is not likely they are in a classified location.

In any case, explosionproof equipment is neither necessary nor by itself acceptable for Class II. Dust-ignitionproof may be required; dusttight is usually sufficient.
