Can anyone provide information on the difference between coated and uncoated conductors? This question is based on the NEC Table 8 DC resistance information, that provides different resistance based on coated or uncoated conductors.

Why specify one vs. the other?

Re: Coated vs. uncoated condutors

Tinned has better corrosion resistance to acidic enviroments like battery rooms.

Re: Coated vs. uncoated condutors

My understanding is that the wire is tin coated when used with rubber insulation.

Peter good point. RHW with Hypalon insulation contains sulphuric acid compounds for fire resistance properties.

Back in the 60's, Anaconda had a brand they called "durasheath" I believe. It had tinned conductors with RHW insulation. I think it was also rated USE. It was so large that 3 No. 12"s would be all you could get in a ? RMC on long runs.

I think this dates back to the days when RHW was popular. The copper was always tinned. Today this is not usually an issue unless you are retrofitting an existing installation that uses the old RH or RHW conductors.

Why specify one vs. the other? You wouldn't today. THHN, THWN, etc is uncoated.

Hal,
I use DLO/RHW for large motors and that has tinned conductors. You are correct that the most commonly used conductor types are not tinned.
