Hello fellow members,

Is there a code requirement to enclose cpvc sprinkler pipes with dry wall, in a elevator machine room, trash room or electric room?

Please advise.

Thanks,
Ranju

3. For a concealed installation:
A. In accordance with the UL Listing, protection shall be provided for BlazeMaster® CPVC pipe and fittings. The minimum protection
shall consist of either one layer of 3⁄8” thick gypsum wall board, 1⁄2” plywood soffits, or a suspended membrane ceiling with lay-in panels or
tiles having a weight of 0.35 pounds per sq. ft. when installed with metallic grids. For residential occupancies defined in NFPA 13D and
13R, the minimum protection may consist of one layer of 1⁄2” plywood. In these cases, any standard sprinkler head rated at 170°F or less
may be used.

So, it seems to be a UL listing requirement.

I might also add that sprinkler pipes aren't allowed to run through an elevator equipment room unless they are serving the elevator equipment room.

OT: Because you don't want the risk of a damaged pipe in the room, but it's okay to accept the risk of a sprinkler? I would believe that.

Yes, I believe its in the NEC in 645. You can have a sprinkler head in the equipment room (there usually needs to be a heat detector and shunt trip that go along with it).

But I forget the exact language - something about only things that are necessary to serve the equipment can go in the equipment room. So a sprinkler main shouldn't through the equipment room.

Looks like it'll be Article 620, but my book here isn't current anyway, and I'm not going to check it all at. But thanks! Didn't think the NEC would actually address that issue.

Yes, it would have been in 620. That's what I get for trying to remember numbers without looking them up.

And actually, I don't see it in there. There is a general statement about the equipment room being a space dedicated to the elevator equipment, and another about not running feeders through the equipment room.

The more general restriction that would cover sprinkler pipes might be in the elevator code, or the building code.
