I came across an installation today where there were two puck lights in a permanantly installed bookcase. The attic above it had a single run of SPT-2 lamp cord coming out of a hole in the top plate of the wall below and running directly into a jbox. Ovbiously a code violation, not to mention a hazardous install. How can this be done in a compliant fashion? Are there any puck lights that can be wired with a chapter 3 wiring method? I am not exactly sure what is between these two puck lights and the single cord I saw. I dont know if theyre low voltage and there is a transformer buried inside the wall..

The only puck light I installed were either low voltage or high voltage with a cord and plug on the end. In your case a piece of 14/2 is probably your best bet-- assuming your light is 120V. If it is low voltage then there are some kits that have wiring approved as part of the ul listing that is approved for use inside walls.

can you suggest a manufacturer of low voltage kits with wiring approved for inside walls?

I am thinking the installation I saw had the transformer sitting above the lights and the SPT-2 I saw was the line cord on the transformer.

I believe Hera and Seagull allow romex to be run from transformer to light. Most other puck light assemblies are listed for only their cable which cannot be run through the structure of the building
