Does any one know where in(or if it is in) the 2002 NEC I might find the required burial depths for cable TV runs to residential dwellings. I cannot seem to find it. Please help?

Re: Code Help?

I've never seen it in there but around here you are lucky if it is more then 5 or 6 inches. Folks are always cutting them with lawn implements.

Re: Code Help?

My dad was in the lawn grading and seeding business until he retired last year. On yards where the TV cable had been buried prior to his arrival, he would go to the house and disconnect the cable. Then he would start pulling upward. As fast as he could walk, he would pull all of the cable out of the ground and coil it up at the cable splice box near the property line. It was rarely more than 1-2 inches below the surface. If he tried to skim the surface to make a seed bed, he would always snag the cable if he did not pull it up first!!! After completion of the lawn installation he would string the cable back out to the house on the surface and reconnect it for the homeowner. He always told the owner to wait until the grass is established and then have the cable company plow it in!

Re: Code Help?

I did some work in a public housing new build. The jokers putting in phone and cable put it on top of the ground and held it in place with sod staples. Then the sod guys came in behind and laid the sod over it. I know that ordinarily there should be nothing close to dangerous voltages on these cables, but come on! Where is the pride in work? If it costs more, raise the phone and cable bill. The phone and cable companies don't seem to have any trouble figuring out how to do that.

Re: Code Help?

Thanks for the info. It's odd how the box the CATV comes from has a warning on it saying voltages can be up to 90 volts, and they can just put the cable an inch or two down, cover it with some leaves and say it is safe.
