Code on conduit run

We are getting ready to do 170ft straight run from one junction box to the next. I'm told but unable to find in the NEC where it is required to have a J box every 100ft. Is this just a good work practice or a code that is eluding me in my search. Thanks in advance.

Re: Code on conduit run

It's just a convenience, not a code issue.

360 degrees of bend would be a determining factor, but not length.

Re: Code on conduit run

Kvl, as stated it would be more for convenience, just remember if you have a high roof, and a low drop ceiling this can be a problem if the wiring is not run until after the drop ceiling is installed, or for future use as adding a circuit. also if there are splices and then with a low ceiling, this can become a problem if a splice goes bad. If you decide to limit the # of j-boxes you can always blow a pull string thru the conduits. Also high roof no drop ceiling can also create problems after the tenant moves equipment in place, and the cost of renting a lift in the future, etc. Just a few things to think about.

Re: Code on conduit run

I would say a J-box every 498 feet as 500 foot spools of wire are easier to work with then 1000 foot spools of wire.

then again about every 230 foot because of your 240 foot fish tape

how many bends are in your conduit what size conduit and how many of what size wires sometimes it is cheaper to increase conduit size for long runs for ease in pulling versus the time spent trying to fit max wires in min conduit size (did I say this right?)

Re: Code on conduit run

The 100' J-box rule is one of the myths in a recent thread titled "Old wives tale code"

Could it be a job spec?

Re: Code on conduit run

Yes it could be a job spec, but most likely it is just ignorance based on doing things the way they've always been done.

Note: I am in a sarcastic mood today.

That could work with jet line, parachute, and shop vac.

If conduit can't be opened during pull, with tight bends, try jet-line parachute threaded through compressed gas hose, and shop vac on other end. (Did this for long AC run under commercial roof)
