Well my situation is that behind a small building with a 400A 240v 3phase service,(and the building only using single phase of the 3phase service)with the meter mounted to the left of the aux.gutter and having 4 disconnects below the gutter.

Well my concern here is that to the left of the main disconnects(Both main disconnects being in the center)there is a 60A disconnect feeding an A/C unit and to the right of the mains there is a 60A disconnect that controls a set of air compressors. With that being established,is it a violation for both the 60A disconnects to be tapped from the line side of the main disconnect? That being the load side of the metercan.

And the other concern i have is that the A/C and the air comppressor are the 3phase 240v,while the mains feeding the panel are single phase 240/120v.The high leg comes from the meter can into the aux.gutter and both A/C and air comp.are tapped into the high leg.

I'm aware of the upto 6 diconnect rule in section 230 of the nec,but I'm not 100% sure of what is permissible as far what kind of load is allowed to be tapped.

Does the wording of the nec permits any kind of load whether it be an a/c or an outlet for that fact as long it is fused properly?
Shouldn't these loads come from the a circuit breaker in the main panel instead of being spliced in the aux gutter that feed the mains?
I understand about 230.82 about firepumps and other exceptions but that is for the supply side of the service.PLease clarify!!!!!!

Any and all answer would ba appreciated!!!
thx!! :)

Re: code question!!!!!!!on section 230

You can't have 240 3 phase. It is either 120/208 3 phase or 120/240 single phase.

kfenn,

Have you never seen a 240 volt, three phase service? I agree that they are not used much today, but there are still many in use.

If I understand you correctly - these taps have no OCPD ...this tap is before the svc disconnect. ..if you look at 240.21(B)(5) - 'Outside Taps' - (sounds like the scenario you are describing is outside a building)- there does not appear to be a requirement for OCPD ahead of the tap. If my understanding is correct, then there does not seem to be a violation.

Re: code question!!!!!!!on section 230

It would seem to me that these disconnects would be service disconnects if connected in this manner and all the applicable rules of article 230 would apply.

Re: code question!!!!!!!on section 230

Even though the A/C units do not need the grounded conductor I believe because the 60 amp disconnects are service disconnects being supplied by a system that is grounded, the grounded conductor needs to be present in these 60 amp disconnects and there needs to be a bond for grounding electrode/grounded conductor for these 60 amp service disconnects.

Thx for everyones speedy response on this subject, well except for the guy who told me that a 120/240 doesn't exist.

And to specify, these loads are fused, that being the a/c and the compressors.

Just wanted to be sure if the wording nec just considers anything tapped ahead of the service disconnect allowable, whether it be an outlet or a 7ton ac unit as long as it is fused or has ocpd.I'm a correct?
