I have a 2500 amp service on a Nursing Home.We had one of the underground service feeders short out and we need to replace the (4) 500 mcm THW cables with new wire.My question is,does the new wire have to be THW or can i use THWN.The AHJ says we need to replace the wire in all 7 conduits because they need to be the same type of wire. Can someone point this out to me in the code.I agree they should be the same size, but i'm upgrading the insulation only from THW to THWN.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,Dennis

The Inspector should be refuring to 310.4 Conductors in parallel. There are 5 conditions that the conductors have to be meet to be able to be parralled.

you might ask the ahj if they will accept an engineer's certification of the service, and see if an engineer will do that for you (in deference to the expense otherwise)

First I can only assume that the customer is sad, maybe happy if he retains the copper for the summer BBQ ...

Why not offer to scope the conduit in question, as it was brought up.

It seems the AHJ has the authority.

Hopefully you have a spare pipe or two. You can be guaranteed that the pipe with the failed conductors will be thrashed inside. At least rough enough that I wouldn't want to drag through new high-dollar conductors.

The wire had actually shorted out inside the gear and not in the conduit. It had been laying across a piece of metal and eventually shorted out.The AHJ did allow for only the one conduit to be repulled useing THWN after his supervisor approved it.My big concern was getting this place back up and running.I would have loved to replace all seven feeders $$$$,but really cared more about all the old folks inside. And yes,the customer kept every tiny piece of the copper. He said he got $1.70 a pound for it.He got BURNED !
