Code question

We are moving a machine in our shop and just discovered the the 3 phase 480 primary wires going to the main disconnect were not long enough and the contract electrican wire nutted extension wires in order to make the wires reach. Is this legal? If not, which code does it violate?

Re: Code question

If the splice is made in an appropriate sized box than it is NEC compliant. As for this being an industrial control panel check out Article 409 of the 2005 NEC, this is a new article and deals with control panels.

Re: Code question

While a splice can be made in a disconnect or fuse enclosure, a motor controller is generally not sized to allow splices.
Find this rule in NEC Section 430.10
(A) General. Enclosures for motor controllers and disconnecting means shall not be used as junction boxes, auxiliary gutters, or raceways for conductors feeding through or tapping off to the other apparatus unless designs are employed that provide adequate space for this purpose.
FPN: See 312.8 for switch and overcurrent-device enclosures.

Re: Code question

These are the primary wires going to the main dis connect for the machine. I would think it is not acceptable but want to be sure before I make an issue of it.
