I took a code test this morning and a few questions have me scratching my head. 1st off can you run UF exposed in a agricultural barn or would this be considered exposed to physical damage. 2nd can someone please explain to me 334.17? Im not sure what that is saying.:-? Last one, is it permissible to run romex through bored holes in a unfinished basement? Our inspector hear makes us run romex parallell the the joists and if we cant makes us use a running board but after reading 334.30a I believe this isnt right.

Yes, it can be run exposed, but anywhere that it is exposed to physical damage it would need to be protected. That would be subjective. Keep it away from the animals, implement storage, etc., or sleeve it as needed.

Is it 300.4 or the (B)(1) sub-section you're thinking of? Grommets to protect NM in holes in metal framing members, otherwise 300.4 is not the shortest section ...

I agree with you, 334.15(C) clearly says "... smaller cables shall be run either through bored holes in joists or on running boards...
