I recently wired a detached workshop. 40 amp service. A maximum of 50 ft from house panel to workshop panel. I ran 8/3 with ground, bought a ground bar and mounted in panel to seperate ground and neutral. Inspector says I have to drive a ground rod. Where can I find this in code book. Thx, Jason.

Re: Code Reference Needed

Jason, look at 250.32. Take note of each paragraph to see the different applications.

Re: Code Reference Needed

250.50 tells us what, if available, shall be bonded together to form the grounding electrode system at each building or structure served. Where none of the items are available, one or more shall be installed and used. Check 250.52(A)(1) through (A)(6) for a list of suitable electrodes.

Re: Code Reference Needed

OK all, all jokes aside, maybe I really should get a new code book I dont have a 250.50 either! I bought my code book from Hughes electrical supply, and I notice on the cover that their logo is actually printed onto the cover. My code book jumps from 250.190 Grounding Of Equipment to ARTICLE 280 Surge Arresters. The cover of the code book clearly states NEC 2002 Natiomal Electrical Code International Electrical Code Series. I paid like 45.00 for it. Did I get ripped off or what?? Like I said, all jokes aside, this is really pissing me off. Thx all for the replies

Re: Code Reference Needed

I think you really must be still joking. Article 250 does end with 250.190. 250.32 is on page 102, and 250.50 is on page 104.

Re: Code Reference Needed

iwire, my code book 2002 NEC art. 250.32 states two or more buildings or structures supplied from a common service. Art 250.52 states grounding electrodes. Jason should be reading carefully art. 250.32.
Bye
