I have read articles refering to NEC code requirement on removing old and abandoned cabling in commercial buildings. I have found Article 800.2 defining abandoned cabling but not the code reference itself. Am I looking in the wrong place, if not where is this information??

Re: Code reference to remove old or abandoned cabling

Here are the only two citations of ?abandoned cables? that are not just definitions of the phrase (2002 code):

800.53 (A) Cables installed in ducts, plenums, and other spaces used for environmental air shall be Type CMP. Abandoned cables shall not be permitted to remain.

830.55 (B) Cables installed in ducts, plenums, and other spaces used for environmental air shall be Type BLP. Abandoned cables shall not be permitted to remain.

Please note that these articles relate to Communications Systems cables. There is no similar requirement to remove any power (i.e., feeders or branch circuit) cables that have been abandoned.

There are a few references to removal of abandon line voltage conductors.

372.13 (Cellular Concrete Floor Raceways)

374.7 (Cellular Metal Floor Raceways)

390.7 (Underfloor Raceways)

And more low voltage references in

640.3(A)

645.5(D)(5)

725.3(B)

760.3(A)

770.3(A)
