A question has come up on a project in Winter Haven florida.
Is there a code requirment for an extrior light at the outside of exit door on a commericial office building? I can't seem to find anything requiring such except on residences. Can you help?

The IBC requires not only a light, but in many places it also requires 2 lamps with an emergency source of power (battery or Article 700 generator).

I ran into this a few months ago here in some small office buildings.Inspector backed down on saying it was nec required. There are several without a rear door exit and have been signed off by county and fire department.Unless its on the print i would not install it.County did plan review didnt they ?

New York State Residential Building Code

R303,4 Stairway illumination.
All interior an exterior stairways shall be provided with a means to illuminate the stairs, including landings and treads. ... Exterior stairways shall be provided with an artificial light source located in the immediate vicinity of the top landing of the stairway. Exterior Stairways providing access to a basement from the outside grade level shall be provided with an artificial light source located in the immediate vicinity of the bottom landing of the stairway.

The NYS Building Code (which is different than the residential code) also has a similar requirement for building that are other than dwellings.

The 8 documents that are part of the Fire Prevention Code (the codes that NYS installers refer to first in building, of which the Building Code and the Residential Code are two of the documents) are adopted and part of law.
