I am doing a remodel in a fairly small commercial building. My question is what are the requirements for any type of night lights, meaning any lights that need to stay on all the time in any certain locations,if any. The building will have a capacity of about 100 people. What NFPA code book should i reference to find the answer and have handy to use in the future. Also for a flourescent light using an emergency ballast, would a black light(bulb) be sufficient? again where can i find answers to these questions in the future, as opposed to calling the fire inspector on every question? thanks so much, justin

Re: code requirement?

Hi Justin. The building code that your state has adopted will hold your answer, such as the IBC or UBC.

Basically, emergancy lighting is required when two exits are required. With an office building (occupancy group "B"), two exits are required at 50 occupants. Group "B" is an occupant load factor of 100. 100*50 is 5,000 square feet. If your building (or area) is greater than 5,000 sqaure feet, emergancy illumination will be required. Such illumination is required to provide 1 foot candle throughout at the floor level, so a black will probably not be an option.

Hope this helps you :)

Re: code requirement?

Ryan is right on, except I will respectfully suggest that emergency lighting is required in the path of egress, which might turnout to be "throughout" in your case, but sometimes it is not.

So we don't miss the obvious, it might be a good idea to also check out Article 700, 701, and 702 if you haven't already.

Re: code requirement?

I do not think Justin is asking about emergency lighting, but 'night lights'. NFPA 101 Life Safety Code is one standard to reference. Chapter 7 requires egress lighting in the different chapters 11 - 42 to have egress lighting, with a few exceptions.
"For the purposes of this requirement, exit access shall include only designated stairs, aisles, corridors, ramps, escalators, and passageways leading to an exit."
There is plenty more, but that will give you a start.

Re: code requirement?

To be complete, if you were asking about night lights but not egress or emergency lighting, then it would be a design issue and not required by national code.
