I have a situation where we have a large diesel generator unit that supplies 277/480 volt 3-phase to a 5 hp submersible pump. Does the NEC require a motor control panel with the recommended protection equipment or can you merely plug the unit directly into the circuit breaker panel of the generator? Is a disconnect means required other than the circuit breaker and the plug? In addition since this is a portable generator to a temporary submersible pump does the circuit from the generator to the submersible pump required to be in conduit since it is exposed to the elements, vehicle traffic, etc.?
Thanks, Don

There are two code areas to comply with.
1 Generator must meet 250.32, ie its a separately derived system, requires a system bonding jumper, grounding electrodes may be required if the pump does not plug into a receptacle on the generator
2. In article 430 are the motor rules
Every motor requires a
controller,
disconnect
short circuit and ground fault protection
overload protection

Please look at your application and to see how you plan on complying with above, then come back with more questions

The pump requires the same protection as when it is connected to an utility source.
590.2(A) Other Articles Except as specifically modified in this article, all other requirements of this Code for permanent wiring shall apply to temporary wiring installations.
A disconnect is required within sight of the motor controller. The cords must be protected from damage as required by 590.4. An assured equipment grounding conductor program is required for the cords by 590.6(B).
