Are you allowed to zip tie fire alarm cable to steel studs?? (This is above the drop ceiling , where there is no drywall)

760.8 is what I have found but doesn't list cable ties as a means of support, as 330.30(A) does for mc cable.

Is this a plenum for the Heating and air return, one can tell if they have blank grills, IE they force air in ducts and return through the plenum space.

Frankly I would also think that class of structure is also involved here.
What do I know, I work from contract drawings and the Low Voltage guys get away with everything...

About a month before my office was finished, I got a call that the alarm wouldn't shut off. So, Brinks got called out to replace the old alarm. When they put the new system in, they just left their wires laying loose on the ceiling grid. The AHJ came by for the Electrical Final Inspection, and that was the only thing that was flagged. So, Brinks got a call asking when they were going to finish their install (they weren't happy!). When the Brinks guy was here fixing it, he was overheard muttering something about "not needing code, and there's no real reason for it to exist...". When he left we all had a good laugh. So, they don't always get away with it!

The term "cable ties" has been added to 760.24 in the 2008 NEC. Here is what this section now says:

760.24 Mechanical Execution of Work.
Fire alarm circuits shall be installed in a neat workmanlike manner. Cables and conductors installed exposed on the surface of ceilings and sidewalls shall be supported by the building structure in such a manner that the cable will not be damaged by normal building use. Such cables shall be supported by straps, staples, cable ties, hangers, or similar fittings designed and installed so as not to damage the cable. The installation shall also comply with 300.4(D).

This section has also be renumbered in the 2008 NEC.
