what are the nec code/codes for a sub panel installation in a utility room that has a well water pump, water softner, and washer and dryer in the same 7' by 8' room. note. the sub panel is for a 74 amp tankless water heater. my question is, is there a minimum distance required from sub panel to any water carrying devices? i know the nec says that the electrical deadicated space is to be equal to the panels width, and depth, and to extend from the floor up to a minimum of 6' above the panel or to the ceiling, which ever is the lowest. and that if the panel is not p.v.c. or waterproof, then there must also be a minimum of 1/4'' free space behind the panel. and that no material that is foreign to the electrical system is allowed near the panel. that is all i can find in the nec under that topic for now. please, if you have anymore information on this topic, please give me the nec code for it. i am curious about this topic. thank you, and yours truly, scotty.

Browse through 110.26 for panel clearances, setbacks, etc. Also if in a dwelling, a panelboard with overcurrent protective devices (circuit breakers) is not permitted in a clothes closet or a bathroom. Welcome to the forum.

110.26 is the section you need to start at. You will need to determine if this is truely a damp/wet location, just because there is "water carrying devices'' doesn't a wet location make.

This is definitely not a wet location. Here's the definition:

Location, Wet. Installations underground or in concrete slabs or masonry in direct contact with the earth; in locations subject to saturation with water or other liquids, such as vehicle washing areas; and in unprotected locations exposed to weather.

1.) You Ask - Is there a minimum distance required from a sub-panel to any water carrying device? My Answer is No except as limited by 110.10 and the environment which only you know about since we are not there to see it.

If you are asking can I have a water heater next to the electrical panel for example then I would say yes as long as it does not embark onto the requirements of 110.26 of dedicated equipment space or dedicated work space then I know of nothing that prevents it.

Meet your clearance requirements of 110.26 and know your location and you should be fine.

I would not call Utility Room as wet location....it is simply a location and it is a dry location per the NEC.

Location, Dry. A location not normally subject to dampness
or wetness
. A location classified as dry may be temporarily
subject to dampness or wetness, as in the case of a
building under construction.

thank you for your replies. i went ahead and moved the sub panel to the other side of the 7' by 6' utiliy room as the ladie requested. i guess in situations where the code is not specific on a certain subject, you have to use common sense, and your better judgement to make sure everything goes smooth in case there should be an incident in the future. in this case, the sub panel was installed first, and then the plumbing. but the plumbing was installed about 12 inches away from the sub panel, and it is not a type 3 weatherproof panel. so in the event that the plumbing should fail sometime in the future, like a pipe leak or something, the sub panel is far enough away from the water pies to be safe from contact. i just ran 1'' non metallic liquidtight from the sub to the new tankless water heater witch is located rite next to the plumbing system. thanks again for your advice, and for welcoming me to the forum. yours truly, scott.
