I have my supervisors here who say everything in NEC 2014 is derived from building codes.

I fail to see how everything in NEC can be derived from building codes (IBC). Does anyone know?

Is that how the NFPA works, they take building codes and then make up the NEC?

The NFPA have their own building codes, however the IBC codes are more popular.
The NEC dates back 125 years, well before the IBC.
Also the NFPA is widely used for fire and life safety.

Can't speak for the IBC but if you look at the IRC, Section VIII, it states it is produced by the NFPA and based on the NEC.
