Coil wire fusing?

I want to run relay with a 480volt coil directly off the contactor that runs the motor. The contactor is in a control panel box attached to the equipment. Do I need to fuse the coil wires for the relay coming of the contactor. The contactor is fused at 40 amps and they are probably 16 gauge wires. The main reason I would like to avoid a fuse block is space.
