I do a lot of work in a college, we just recently adopted the NEC in our area. In laboratories when is it required to install GFCI recpt? If a sink is present in the lab, do I need a GFCI for all recpt? We also have dorms where students live
( 1 room, no bathroom )do these rooms need GFCI
or AFCI? Any help is appreciated.

Re: College Labratories

2002 NEC 210.8(B), commercial buildings require GFCI protection in three areas:
1. Bathrooms
2. Rooftops
3. Kitchens.

No more, no less. Proximity to a sink makes no difference. :)

Re: College Labratories

You could always establish a standard requiring more than the code if you wish.
During design, I often indicate more GFCI's than required by code minimums.

Re: College Labratories

Thanks for the reply. So I do not need any GFCI recpt in a lab. How about AFCI in the dorms?

Re: College Labratories

Isn't this work being planned and designed by an engineer? Although the NEC doesn't require GFCI outlets, if I were working on a design that required outlets in a school lab, I think I would call for GFCI outlets. Even with out sinks nearby. It seems like there would be a lot of opportunity for someone to shock themselves in a college lab.

Also be aware, colleges may have their own construction standards and regulations, or state regulations may apply. Once again, more reason to have a engineer determine receptacle requirements.

There are no specific requeirements other than the code. I do agree with some of the comments made, but the? is does the code require these items. Thanks for any input.

Re: College Labratories

I can understand that as a contractor you want to be able to determine if there are any deficiencies to the design, so you do not get caught with your pants down. There may be more specific requirements for these dorms and labs, you should check with the specific AHJ for this project if you do not have the proper copy available. The NEC does not require GFCI protection in labs, and if the dorms do not conform to the definition of dwelling, and your jurisdiction has adopted the NEC, than AFCIs are not required.
