Unless you are under the provisions of a more stringent local code, there isn't one.

Take a look at 310.12, 210.5, and 110.15 for additonal requirements...

How about Red? Or maybe Blue? Would those be acceptable for identfying the high leg?

Sure, why not? The code seems to leave the door wide open for installers choice. Pink might be a good choice too, as it really stands out.

I would think that by specifying an outer finish that is orange in color, the other colors would be implicitly excluded.

It does seem that a tag or something saying "To whom it may concern, this is the high leg! " would be suitable:smile:

Ask any of our linemen and they will tell you that it is red. As long as everyone who come in contact with the system understands what the "or other effective means" are, you are good to go.

Right here.

I believe some areas use Purple for high legs and some areas place the high leg on C.
Some people even line them all up in a row.

I was in a 3ph panel today where phase a was 208v to gnd and phase b and c were 120v to ground. and in between phases was 240v. Is this a delta 240v system with the 208 being the wild leg. Have never seen a delta 240 system before

Yes, you were dealing with a center grounded Delta.

...or other effective means of making it "orange".
Exactamundo.

In older equipment, the POCO always made it red and on the right (what we call C-phase), but we now make it orange and in the center of our equipment (B-phase), but always check with the POCO for their meter requirements.

I have highlighted a few of the words here:

"Only the conductor or busbar having the higher phase voltage to ground shall be durably and permanently marked by an outer finish that is orange in color or by other effective means."

To me, that means if you're going to mark it by use of a color, that color is orange. Other effective means indicates the use of something other than color.

When I was a lineman, I saw nothing but red high legs, but I think this Art. says the color identifying a high leg is supposed to be orange

Since the sentence contains an "or" it means either one of those conditions can be met. "Other effective means" is wide open to whatever you choose to that will make it obvious that a high leg is present. This could mean phase taping a conductor with 3 bands of pink, yellow and orange tape for instance.

Our linemen always used red for the B? marking. I received a call from a line crew several years ago where an electrical contractor had use red, orange, black, and white for his service entrance conductors. Our linemen wanted to know which one was the high phase and the electrician was not around. I told them to connect the high phase to the orange conductor and then wrote the following for our Electric Service and Meter Manual:
On a three phase, four wire, delta service, the phase conductor having the higher voltage to ground shall be permanently marked at each point of connection, in accordance with the Indiana Electrical Code. If red or orange is used to mark the phase having the higher voltage to ground, red or orange shall not be used to mark any other phases.
We have not had that problem since. I also believe the intent is to permit red, lavender, blue, and white to be used if you are consistent and it is effective to all who see the system.
