Color-coded MC cable

But why?

Just one/or many more item/s to stock and store.

What's next - color coding for the conductor size - like Romex does now - as well as the number/color of conductors?

That's alotta crap to stock.
 
Brad, we have been using this for quite awhile and it is great. :)

The problem is trying to estimate the correct quantities of each combination which is especially hard if you are doing large projects with more than one voltage system and trying to buy a lot package for negotiated pricing. :(

I see your point. We install tens of thousands of feet of MC cable every year from 12-2 all the way up to 750-4. This stuff will be a great help for the guys in the field. We buy in quantity, so we can afford to have a skid or two of each size available.
 
Yes, we use it our mc jobs. The ahj started requesting it on the 277 circuits. Then we started using it on the 120/208. The ahj likes it, Problem is ordering the correct amount of each phase. We always seem to come up short on red or blue and end up using black in it's place. The suppliers don't always seem to have the quantities we require in stock. Just 2 weeks ago we ordered 5- 1000' rolls of each black,red and blue. Not in stock ended up changing the order to 15-1000' rolls of black :(
I won't order those small 250' coils of mc either -just 1000' reels
 
I mostly see this type of MC in my area. It is great, easy to identify when digging through the back of the van.

Do you mean AC??

If there is a Health Care MC on the market and available I would like more info. I could not find anything on Alflex's or AFC's website.

I know about MC Smart, but it does not seem to be available yet.

I'm glad someone finally noticed I asked that. :)

Does the inspector have the authority to request that one system employ BOY, and the other BRBl? The AFC cables follow that color format, and as you know there is no code rule to use a particular color scheme.

I'm just saying that I don't think the inspector has the right to request colored jacket MC cable with special-colored conductors. They could use "regular" MC and phase tape the conductors and still be in compliance with 210.5(C) (in my opinion, of course.)

Don't get me wrong, I like that AFC stuff myself, and it makes for an easier job. But I don't think that an inspector can require it.
 
I agree, Peter. Also,under the 2005 you are not required to identify phase, just voltage. Under the 2002 you had to identify phase, which is much harder to comply with.

I have never requested this, but I have told installers that it is readily available when I write up the section :D.

Southwire now has MCAP and HCFMCAP this used to be called MC Smart before it was released. Now it's MC All Purpose (MCAP)

It doesn't have a green wire (except for the HCFMCAP). It has a full size bare AL ground wire that you just cut off. The jacked is now listed as an equipment ground.

I have the pdf spec sheets that Southwire emailed to me if you want them.
