In 3 phase applications is there a specified colors for 120/208 or 480/277 ?
red/black/blue orange/yellow/brown

Re: color coding wire

There is a recent thread posted here that addresses this issue in full. I do not have the link-- but somebody does I'm sure.

Also, if you poke around the mikeholt.com newsletters, some of the Mike Holt newsletters address this issue as well.

The short answer is no per NEC, but there are industry standard conventions, and there are local & POCO codes or internal guidelines that do spell it out. Again, the other thread has all the answers.

Re: color coding wire

I have always coded in this manner:

Low Voltage
120/208 and 120/240delta
A phase=Black
B phase=Red
C phase=Blue
Neutral=White
Ground=Green

High Voltage
277/480
A phase=Brown
B phase=Orange
C phase=Yellow
Neutral=Gray
Ground=Green

I know the NEC does not specify this method,except for the "hi-leg", neutral/grounded conductor, and the Grounding conductor

Re: color coding wire

Orange, Brown, Yellow, 517.160 this is the only NEC required "three phase system color code"

All other "three phase system" color codes are trade accepted practices as KColwell points out, but not NEC requirements.

Never trust any colors, your voltmeter is your safety. Before 2002 gray was not prohibited from being an ungrounded conductor and in reality green could be used for an ungrounded conductor now.
