Color Coding

Is there a standard reference to have a contractor use the "Black/Red/Blue" color coding for phase conductors? Such as NECA xxxx or NEMA aaaa. I am getting little leeway to be directive in my statements on design build projects but am allowed to use references to published industry standards. Any help?

Re: Color Coding

The black/red/blue is a trade practice, and is often specified by designers. It's not specified by the NEC, but may well be in other organization's documents.

Unless you have a local code (some areas do), you are free to choose the colors you wish as long as they don't violate the NEC. You can't use green, white or gray for hot/ungrounded conductors as you're probably aware.

You could use pink, purple and red for 480 volt systems and black, orange and brown for 208 volt systems. Many industrial facilites have oddball systems like this and it's entirely up to the designers to choose the system.
