I suggest you read the section again and and this time be sure to read Exception 8

1996 NEC
310.15(b)Exception 8 A fitting identified for the use shall be permitted in lieu of a box where the conductors are not spliced or terminated.
This is a common and accepted practice in the area I work, I have never seen conductors damaged by this method.

Methods don't damage conductors, hacks damage conductors. :p

Re: Combination MC connectors

I have searched several manufacturers sites and have even spoken to one, and it appears that no one makes a combination fitting that is approved for mc cable. There are fittings for ac to emt, but none apparently have been tested and approved for mc. The fact that everyone does it, and has been doing it for years, does not make it acceptable.

I tend to disagree. Article 300.15(C) specifically allows the use of conduit to provide cable support and/or protection. Since all of the fittings used are UL lsited (MC Conn/couping/EMT conn) there should be no reason they cannot be combined for an approved installation method.

Re: Combination MC connectors

GFH, keep in mind that this project is being built to the '96 NEC. You're quoting the 2002 and later editions. The section you are quoting refers to the entire cable actually entering the race, jacket included. As an example: where NM is used in a garage with a block wall, it is often sleeved in emt. The fitting referred to in this article may be a plastic bushing to protect the cable. Also, we have to keep in mind that just because a product is listed doesn't mean that we may use it anywhere; It can only be used as it has been tested and approved (110.3).
