Acctually the 1999 NEC 210-12 (b) made the requirement of 120-volt, single phase 15 and 20amp recetpacle outlets installed in dwelling unit bedrooms shall be protected by an arc-fault circuit interrupter. This requirement shall become effictive January 1, 2002.

The OP was talking about combo units, which Dennis was referring to.
