Anyone have any views on surface floor outlet in a commercial building? Owner wanted us to drill through floor into back of 4" square and mount box directly to floor. AHJ said to stand box upright to avoid dust. Not sure if floor rated outlet is required since this is a surface mount situation. Any help would be appreciated.

IMO the NEC allows you to place a 4" square box with an outlet in it face up on the floor.

The requirement for 'listed floor boxes' is confined to boxes 'in' the floor.

I think that is bad idea to do what your suggesting.

At the least use a 'FS' Box (bell box) that has no KOs in it.

Better still us the FS box and stand it up as the inspector is suggesting.

I agree with Bob. I'm not even sure that a listed floor box could be surface mounted and still comply with it's listing. As Bob stated the use of the listed floor box would be for the boxes actually in the floor not on it.
