Commercial hood fan control panel

I know this is an older post, but I have a question along the same lines.
I have a control panel for a commercial hood fan, this panel contains two contactors. One for the exhaust fan, and one for the supply air fan. These contactors do require a disconnect means correct within sight? or not. the last one I did was within sight of the main panel, so I didn't even think about it. But the one I ran into today is in a different room. and if they have to have a disconnect, wouldn't the control circuit have to have a disconnect? I may just be over thinking this, but I just like to make sure.

Thanks in advance.

Commercial hood fan control panel

I think the answer is in another topic, but it isn't being posted anymore. anyway.

If you have a commercial hood fan control panel, and in this panel there are two contactors. One for the supply air fan, and the other for the Exhaust fan. also with connections for hood lights, connections for the micro swith(fire system.) The contactors do require a disconnect within sight, correct?

That means the hood needs a disco. Is that what the OP was asking???? It seems he was talking about the contactors specifically.

Is the hood an appliance?
In my experience the motors are located on roof and are seperate.
The hood is merely a duct to direct air.
I don't think the light fixtures in it would justify an appliance either.
Not sure--seems gray.
I have never seen in my 18 years an engineer draw in a disconnect for the hood control panel.

Let me add to the last reply.
I beieve the control panel is a motor controller and the panel feeding it is usually in the kitchen and within site of the controller.

That is how I see it, The contactors, in the "control panel" are motor controls and there for need a disconnect. This is only the second one I have ever done, so I just wanted to make sure I was thinking on the right lines. Thanks for the replies.

JMT,

Where is this ' control panel' located, on the roof with the equipment, or in

the kitchen near the hood? Control panels don't need disconnects, contactors

don't need disconnects, Motors, yes, they need disconnects.

Ben, could this be part of the new article 409 requirements?

ARTICLE 409 Industrial Control Panels
409.30 Disconnecting Means
Disconnecting means that supply motor loads shall comply with Part IX of Article 430.

430.101 General
Part IX is intended to require disconnecting means capable of disconnecting motors and controllers from the circuit.

The Control panel is on the side of the hood behind an access door, or removable panel if you will. this control panel consist of Contactactors for the motors which are on the roof, which have Disconnects on them(on the roof). the control panel is where th connections are made to the Microswitch for the Fire sup. system. The OP is since this panel is acting as a motor control center then it needs a disconnect, or at least the contactors for the motors do. That is how I see it. If you have a pump with a pressure switch remotely located then you need two disconnects, one for the pressure switch "the pump controller" and one at the pump. Is this not right??

I would not call a commercial hood control panel an Article 420 appliance.

I can not agree with you here. Motor controllers do require disconnecting means.

I would call a commercial hood control panel an Article 409 'Industrial control panel'.

And as Rick pointed out 409.30 tells us to comply with part IX of 430.

430.102(A) requires a disconnecting means at the motor controller.

430.102(B)Requires anther disconnect at the motor if not in sight from the one at the controller.

IMO, this Hood control power needs a disconnecting means for the the sources of power.

All the ones I have worked on or installed had such disconnects factory installed.

Finally someone with more post than BOB. How does it feel being second???

Not good. :D

And with JMTs average post count showing 2.8 BILLION posts per day I have some real work ahead of me. :D
