IMO, under the '17 Code, hardwired = no. (not sure about 2020)

The 2020 code in 422.5(A)(7) requires all dishwashers supplied from a circuit with a voltage to ground of 150 volts or less and protected by an OCPD of 60 amps or less to have GFCI protection. Hardwired or cord and plug connected does not make any difference for this in the 2020 code.

In the 2017 code, GFCI protection is only required for dwelling unit dishwashers, but applies to both hard wired and cord and plug connected.

don, so as I don't misinform some one, assuming the dishwasher is in a kitchen, under '17 if it was cord & plug it wold need GFCI, correct ?

In a commercial kitchen the receptacle that it is plugged into would require GFCI protection under the 2017 code.
