Good Morning Everyone,

I have a (1) 3-phase 60 amp oven, (1) 3-phase 20 mixer, and (1) 3-phase 30 amp mixer

Can I use the cord coming with this equipment and install the 3 disconnects(hardwire)? These three commercial kitchen equipment has a cord with the right side of the conductor and the ground wire coming from the factory.

Please I greatly appreciate your advice.

Best Regards,

YT

As I read 400.10, if you use the cord you will need to have an cord & plug connection and under 210.8(B) the receptacles will need to be GFCI protected.

If you are on the 2020 or 2023 code make sure you take a look at 210.8(B) before deciding to use a cord and plug connection.

Sounds to me like he's saying there is a cord without a plug and he wants to put a disconnect on the wall and hardwire the cord into it?

Usually if it has a cord from the factory, it is a portable piece of equipment that has wheels. Usually to be moved for cleaning, so the customer probably wants it plug connected.

I built a pizza shop last year that has this same equipment, but all on fixed floor stands and did not come with a cord. We installed disconnects with seal tight whips.

If they’re on wheels, they likely want it cord-and-plug. I’ve worked with some smaller ovens that are on rolling stands. A mixer that size is likely going to be a stand mixer.

The issue on your oven if it is portable will be the 60/3 GFCI. Square D is the only manufacturer that offers a miniature 60/3 GFCI breaker, so if you have any other brand, you will have to use an external GFCI device feeding the receptacle, and they are about $1k.

I would consult the customer and the manufacturer as to whether the cords can be removed and maintain warranty.

We put in GFI's to keep you from getting shocked, then, require cord and plug disconnects to increase the chances that you'll get shocked.
