Commercial Laundry

We are in the process of designing a commercial laundry facility at a prison. Article 422.31.C permits the circuit breaker to be used as the disconnecting means if it is within sight (within 50') of the equipment. This is not feasible. it is also not advisable to locate disconnect switches close to the machinery where they can be operated by the prisoners.

Is it permissable to wire a set of auxillary contacts from the circuit breaker to a set of indicator lights (red / green) close to the unit?

Welcome to the forum.:)

What type of equipment are we talking about?

A cord and plug can constitute the required disconnecting means in accordance with 422.33.

Commercial Laundry Equipment

A mix of single stage presses, washers and gas dryers, and folders, ironers, and spreader / feeders. The largest loads are the presses (3P, 480V, 54A running), the ironers (3P, 480V, 57A running), and the gas dryers (3P, 480V, 43A running).

Disconnects are not to be confused with Emergency Stops. Disconnects can be locked in the closed position.

Understood about locking the disconnects in the closed position, but I would also need a lock on the enclosure itself. Also, why purchase a 3P breaker for the piece of equipment and also purchase a 3P disconnect for the same piece of equipment?

For this laundry there are over 60 pieces of equipment that require a disconnecting means.
