Commerical Kitchens - Class I Div 2?

Had a question asked to me today. Why aren't commercial kitchens with natural gas appliances classified as Class 1, Div 2 spaces? The argument is that if a natural gas leak was present, it could lead to an explosive situation.

I never thought of it and have never classified kitchens with gas appliances. Just thought I'd see where this is addressed in the code.

It's sort of hinted at in Section 500.5(B)(2)FPNs - basically, it's our common experience.
 
Think about it. The open flame burners would be a much greater source of ignition then the electrical system. Would you require the crawl space of your house with a natural gas furnace to be classified?
