We are working on a project with a suspended drywall ceiling. We are having an issue with installing fixture boxes. Caddy 512 brackets do not work as they are designed for a tile suspended ceiling where the tile sits in the grid. Do to box fill we need to use 4x4x2 1/8" deep boxes.

We are now using caddy 512A. We ran into the same issue with depth however. In order to make it work we either need to use a 4" square box with a 4"S extension box/ring or a 3.5" deep box. We ordered some 3.5" inch boxes but they do not have a center rear knockout so will not work with the caddy brackets. I found other 3.5" deep boxes with the center rear KO but they have some lead time. If we were to use a 4"x 1 1/2" deep extension box/ring to a 4" box will this be a code violation when used to support a 6.5lb light fixture.

If this is just a plain old suspended drywall ceiling not T-bar , we always used black iron or channel run across from the framework. 4s boxes with appropriate mud rings and we were good to go.
If there was a issue with weight of fixture we added a threaded rod connected to a major frame member for the additional support.

It is for 115 boxes. I was trying to avoid drilling them as it will take some time. We would have to drill two holes, one for the cable and one for the 1/4" - 20 screw for the bracket.

Can you access the space between the suspended drywall and the ceiling? If so, just grab some metal studs from the framer's, mount it above the suspended ceiling, and screw your fixture boxes to it.
