Hi everybody. Just stumbled on this forum and think it's great.

I'm working on a new dormitory building in NYC which has a main telecomm room on the basement level. This room contains a telephone backboard, some ladder rack and some network equipment racks.

Both the electrical and telecomm drawings show a note stating: "separate isolated ground wire placed in conduit to be connected by electrical contractor to rack system" and a show a "bus bar" in the corner of the room.

Reading the TC specifications, all that is stated on the issue "is grounding to meet local and national electrical codes." and nothing on the matter is written in the grounding specs.

Before I ask the engineer a question on this, I was wondering if there were any codes or standards that would give me an answer. Thanks

Aram

The main thing to remember is that the two separate grounds/bonds (tel-co and electrical ) get connected together at the "service only" from there it is pretty straight forward. Buss on the wall of the tel-co room and the racks and non electrical equipment gets bonded to the buss, all the electrical equipment gets it ground conductor run with the branch circuit back to the panel.

The most important and only rule is to create a single point ground. The bus bar would be bonded to the building electrical grounding system at one point.
the rules are in 800.100 B. Also see art 100 for definition of intersystem bonding termination which is new in the 2008 NEC

I actually have several rooms like what is discribed..These rooms feed off of the main service located in another building on campus..Now the main room is tied to the ground rod of the main service..

so how do you bond the slave locations in each building..I am interested in others opinions here..I use sheathed cable and bond the sheathing to the main reference and I also bond to the service in the location I am at..But not normally to the ground rod connection on the secondary location..never been failed but have we created a situation by doing that..
