Compact Aluminum Conductors

Is anyone aware of an issue regarding the use of compact aluminum conductors in standard dual rated AL/CU mechanical lugs? I'm told that even though a 750 mcm compact aluminum conductor is almost identical in size and ampacity to a standard copper 500 mcm cable that it can not terminate in a 500 or even 600 mcm lug because the cable has 750 printed on it. The term used was "mislabeling" and would void theUL rating of the lug. Any suggestions?

My first step would be calling the company who makes the lug.

Agree. Check with the lug manufacturer. Some manufacturers specifically say not to reduce the size of the lug for compact conductors.

I've been in touch with Alcan and their response was to use the lug that matches the circular mil size of the wire. My question is that if a cirular mil is a standard unit of measure how can a 750 compact Aluminum and a 500 standard copper be nearly identical in size? It seems to me the manufacturers are mislabeling their products.
