Are cabinets/cut-out boxes listed/labeled for installation in the wall seperating a garage and living quarters. Is the fire rating compromised? Also, do back to back swith enclosures compromise a 1hr fire rated wall? Do Metal or plastic make a difference? I looked inside a 18in^3 enclosure and saw the UL mark with 2hr w c. What does the 2hr w c mean? thanks

the national electrical code does not deal with fire ratings. there is another nfpa manual used by drywall installers that specifies how many box openings you can have within two studs without compermising the wall's rating. we were required to install or glue drywall to the back of our junction boxes in some stairwell walls in a "core-bore" type walls in high rise office buildings. it will tell you the number of square inches allowed depending on the rating of the wall.

See my posts in this thread.

The "2 hr w c" stands for 2 hr wall and ceiling rated.
