A customer owns a bank and would like to be able to turn the lanes on and off for the ATM's remotely. There are all sorts of building management systems on the market, but what she wants to do is similar to what this little $99 device does.

Questions:

1. Is it legal to put a plug on wiring for a ceiling light or in this case a remote sign? Can the wiring terminate in a grommeted box and then come out of the box as a cord and plug without violating the NEC?

2. So you know of devices that are designed for hard-wired control of 15A circuits?

What we want is basically the type of control that a wall-mount occupancy sensor would give, but with a cat 5 computer input instead of occupancy sensor input. Obviously there needs to be software, but the software just needs to tell an intelligent switch to open or close. Simple, simple - like this little outlet device.

Any recommendations?

Lighting Control

Looks like I can use a Wattstopper controller designed to be used with an occupancy sensor to solve this problem. I'm accumulating pieces and parts. Total cost for four independently controlled circuits appears to be in the $1000 range for parts and commissioning by a vendor. FYI.

If you simply want remote control use GE RR relays.

I see no need for a computer unless there is some complicated automatic control algorithm required.

The need is generally so they can control it from any PC / device on a network. Not just from a wall switch.

iwire:

My interpretation of the problem from post #1 is that a simple remote control of some bank drive up lane green and red lights is required.

My guess is that remote control is desired because they don't want to run switched 120 V circuits, and AC power is already available at the islands.

There was no indication that multi-point switching was required. But the GE RR provides an easy method for such switching. The GE RR can also provide feedback on the relay state, All control wiring is low voltage.
