Does the NEC require that power be disconnected on a raised floor upon initiation of a fire alarm via smoke detectors in that room? Art 645.5(D)(3) mentions shutting down the cooling, but not the power.

Do you need to activate the leniences permitted by article 645? If not then do not worry about the disconencting emans listed in 645.

If you need 645, then the smoke detectors only shut down the HVAC. Of course consider that most computerized equipment will fall over and die without HVAC.

See 645.2(1) which refers you to 645.10. All power in the room must be shut down

Re: Computer Room Power Shut Down

bw,
There is nothing in Article 645 that requires the smoke detectors to shut off all power to the room. The section does say that the required disconnect shall shut off all power to the room, but does not require that the fire detection system open this disconnect. The disconnect in 645.10 is a manually operated device.

Re: Computer Room Power Shut Down

(1) is for the disconnecting means. For the disconnecting means you would shut down both power and HVAC.
(2) covers the smoke detection activation of the fire/smoke dampers of HVAC units that serve other areas, not shut down the unit (or any power to IT equipment).

Below floor detectors shutting down the below-floor HVAC is covered under 645.5(D)(3) only.

No where else does it indicate to shutdown power only upon activation of a below floor smoke detector.
