Can I install a 4' section of cable tray, concealed, in a drywall partition? If so does it have to be solid tray w/ a cover, and being as it is covered for less than 6' do I have to derate my type tc cable?

Seems pretty clear. You can go through a wall or floor but not stay within it.

(G) Through Partitions and Walls. Cable trays shall be permitted to extend transversely through partitions and walls or vertically through platforms and floors in wet or dry locations where the installations, complete with installed cables, are made in accordance with the requirements of 300.21.
(H) Exposed and Accessible. Cable trays shall be exposed and accessible except as permitted by 392.6(G).

Thanks guys, that was what I was geting out of the code too, just wasn't sure if there were any exeptions, lol.

Re: Concealed cable tray

Can I add another question: Can I cover the front side of a vertical section of ladder type cable tray with a wall? The back side (with the rungs) would still be open. In no, then can I turn the cable tray around and cover the back side?

My guess - as long as you can access the cables you are probably OK. I would say putting a wall over the front side is unacceptable since you could not remove cables (at least easily). Putting it on the back side is probably Ok since you can still get at and remove (or add) cables without added difficulty.

OTOH, one could argue its accessable with the front side covered, but just not as easy to get at.

Re: Concealed cable tray

HI everyone-

We dont do it, we install conduit sleeves thru the walls and fire seal them. :D

Re: Concealed cable tray

Ok, here's another one. Can I install type TC cable in a drywall partition without a raceway?
My biggest concern here is derating, so I'm trying to avoid conduit sleeves between the tray and recessed panel.
