How many hours labor for 300 feet of this duct bank? 36" to top of concrete. Digging with bobcat backhoe 30" bucket

4" pvc

4" pvc

4" pvc is available in 20 ' lengths but now is a 2 man install process. Shag out the pipe along the trench at delivery to rduce wasted time walking back and forth along trench. Glue heavy and often and use a lump hammer and short 2x4 to bang each piece into place quickly. Get the backhoe operator a head start so you are not waiting on him. Excavators dig quicker. go back and put cover over pipes after the concrete then conductive foil tape over trench . The conductive tape will carry tone for a cable locator without getting close to dangerous cables. Dont forget to call for markout and watch out for underground oil tanks and lines. Immagine ditchwitching through a full 1000 gallon oil tank in a wetlands area you could be fined and sued for 3 generations.

Use a marker to indicate the bell end is properly seated. Concrete can be dyed red. Jet line and a piece of rebar can be used to keep the install snaked as you go. If laborers are laying the pipe, tell them coupings are not a substitute for 15 degree elbows. Only an experienced local digger can accurately estimate the m/h for trenching.

Small chain saw makes a good tool for cutting PVC 4" and up, and saves a lot of time over having to change batteries or drag cord...

Do you guys actually still use conductive tape? We actually aren't supposed to use conductive tape here, since it basically disintegrates after several years, we use regular caution electric line buried below..

conductive tape

conductive tape

yes we sometimes use conductive tape unfortunately there are people working out there that dont understand it so they break the tape on install and dont reconnect making markout more dificult. there are still morons out there who put the markout tape right on top of the cable. Giving no warning to any one digging around the cable. Thankfully the power company more clearly illustrated what is required for marking tape on any underground installation in thier red book for electrical installations. Common sense goes a long way in this buisness.

I know what you mean. I even witnessed some guys wanting to put the ape under the pipes. Come on, common sense will tell you what is there. If you find the tape under the pipe, then it is probably too late. The there are some who insist on putting it right down on the pipe. What good it that? What I like to do is put it about a foot deep, with the pipes being about 36 inches deep.

Duct Bank

Duct Bank

Most important item of all, since it has not been mentioned.....make sure you make frequent use of aluminum tie down wire and rebar driven well into the ground in order to keep the entire contents of the duct bank from floating once you put concrete on it....this is the worse thing that can happen to you on this type of job...
