Conductor Splicing Midway in a Circuit

I have a project where I'm relocating an MCC to another location. The MCC feeder conductors will decrease in length. Conductors feeding loads in the facility will be increased approximately 100 ft. I have a potential voltage drop issue that I'm concerned about. Is it permissible from an NEC standpoint to splice a larger conductor to the existing conductors so long as the smaller conductor is protected at its ampacity by the overcurrent device that is upstream of the first conductor?

Permissible and relatively common in voltage drop situations.

Just don't hide the splice!
Few things as disconcerting as one size wire entering a raceway and a different size/color coming out the other end. :)
