i am trying to understand what causes conductors to rattle inside of conduits when loads are energized. one clear case i have seen is there are 2 air compressors 10hp across the line, 480v that start at the same time. common feeder #6awg, tapped in trough into 2 30af switches with 10awg on the load side of each switch then out to loads total wiring distance is about 125' approximately. what i hear is a hard rattling of the conductors in the conduits when these units start up. what causes that and is it dangerous in the long run and how can it be counteracted. should i upsize the feeder before the tap or should i upsize the wiring after the tap? just trying to understand what's going on. thanks to everyone who has any input.

Re: conductors rattling in conduit

We have the same thing which just started happening on our 40 hp motor start up. See our post on Nuisance tripping of 80 amp CB. Maybe we can get some answers that will help both our concerns.
