I need to run some power in our new shop. The shop is caged in with what is pretty much chain link with a bent steel channel on the top edge of fence.
I have looked around a bit and don't see why I can't do it as long as I can properly support my conduit and j-boxes. Just the same I don't like the
idea. Any thoughts?

I take it you are trying to describe a shop that is an area within something else and the border of the shop is the chain link fence?

If you don't like the strength of the components of the fence you could always beef it up with some unistrut, use RMC or IMC instead of EMT, another option for receptacles along the perimeter, or anywhere in the area for that matter, is pendants.

Thanks for the reply. I did in fact use some unistrut to hang a box on. There's also a instant hot water heater for a shop
sink that was mounted on the fence. I ran conduit to that, supported on the fencing uprights. It is actually pretty strong.
I was just wondering about the NEC applied to hanging raceways on fences.

Well the NEC doesn't exactly address "fences" specifically. A fence could be a single or multiple small gauge wire(s) with occasional support posts that is electrified, or could be thousands of pounds per linear foot of natural stone, concrete, or other heavy material.
