Shepard's Hooks (aka Bo-Peeps and Old Man Canes) are listed in the Urban Legend Electrical Code... Article 3214(B).9(Z):3.1415(R?)6.

I have been told by some other journeyman that goose necks or shepard hooks are illegal based on the bending radius being more than 90 degree's. They argue that the code says the max degree of bends is (4) 90 degree bends.

Tell them to brush up on their understanding of the NEC. That is a misinterpretation of 358.26.

The max degree of bends is three hundred and sixty, you can put all three hundred and sixty of them in one big circle if you can bend pipe that good. I've never done a loopdy loop. I have used a shepards crook when the circumstances dictate a need.

Stick with what it actually says...
3xx.26 Bends ? Number in One Run. There shall not be
more than the equivalent of four quarter bends (360 degrees
total
) between pull points, for example, conduit bodies and
boxes.
