Hey guys I have a problem bending conduit Rigid Pipe to be specific. I have been in the electrical field for awhile but never really had to bend conduit. my biggest problem is getting my measurements right. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Maybe a ruler/tape measure that doesn't have the numbers worn off
:D

Seriously though, we measure down to the 1/8". A beat up rule will case more problems than it's worth.

There are some resources available to assist you in making "picture perfect" conduit runs:
Conduit Bending Theory

Conduit Bending Instructions (EMT Bender)

Benfield

Benfield on Amazon

Electricians Guide to Conduit Bending by Richard A. Cox on Amazon

GreenLee Search results for "bend"

These are just a few of the resources available.

Re: conduit bending

If you can start out with a hand bender using EMT. Practice with that first. You can apply the same principles to Rigid once you feel comfortable with it. If you are just starting out you will go through alot of pipe at first so you are better off using EMT not to mention it is easier to bend.

Re: conduit bending

OK say if I had to bend a 90 using 1 1/4" rigid. i guess it will be called the tail, anyway I need an 80" 90. Every time I have tried to bend this the tail always comes up to be 71 or 73" long and I can't figure out what I am doing wrong. What I do is I'll take a 10' stick of conduit and measure 80" from the end and then I will subtract 12 3/8" for take-up and when I bend it my tail or the longest peice of the conduit is only 71 or 73" INSTEAD OF THE DESIRED 80". What am I doing wrong here? using a chicago bender

Re: conduit bending

oh, that maybe the problem then. because when I am done I usually have a 14" stub in the front. OK, when ever I want to have my tail length a certain length I have to put it in the front of the bender?

Re: conduit bending

By the way its good to see that iwire is still around. I guess I have been in the newsgroup probably for a year now. Its just good to see famaliar names!

Re: conduit bending

lew,
What you want to do is what we call a back to back bend here. It will have a smaller deduct number. You have already made enough bends to calculate this number. You took 80" and deducted 12 3/8" and got a 71" stub, so in this case you need to be deducting only 3 3/8" from the desired length and place the desired length out the back of the bender.

don for some reason I thought it was called the tail and I thought the stub was the short end of the 90. either way once done bending I should 80" in the air instead of 71" parallel to the floor, right?

If you bend a back to back, then the 80" will be parallel to the floor. If you stick the 80"-12 3/8" in front of the bender the 80" will be up in the air. As a general rule once the required length of the 90 is over 60" I would be bending using the back to back method.
