i need to bend 2 90 deg on 1 1/4 emt
i have done some 1/2 and 3/4 with a ideal hand bender
my question is, should i be ok bending 1 1/4 emt with a hand bender or should i seek out a mechanical type?

how much do you weigh??

how much do you weigh??

1 1/4 is easy to bend if you weigh over 250Lbs other wise put on your toolbelt, fill it up with ALL of your tools and jump like mad. If you are planning to stay in the trade invest in a bender for small offsets and licks. Prefab 90's and 45,s are much quicker.

I weigh 185, and I can bend a smooth radius in 1 1/4. I'll start the 90 up to the point where I have to reposition the foot pedal (for lack of a better term). Then I turn myself around so I am facing the long end of the conduit and push, instead of pull, the bender. That way I can still exert a lot of foot pressure. Kind of a balancing act, but far less effort.

Ditto.....

I can bend 1 1/4 for a little while but I don't have enough back side to do it all day. I've seen some oxes that make it look easy, but none for me thanks.

Bend it yourself and your co-workers will think you are a bad, bad man.

Seriously though, I'm 6'4", 305 and I never used to have trouble bending 1-1/4" although I never had to do many bends in one day. Lately though, I have switched to using prefab bends and couplings because I don't seem to be able to bend 90's without kinking. I even bought a new bender but I'll be darned if I can do it. I've never taken the time to spec out different brands of conduit but my supplier says they area all the same. He used to supply Silverslick brand EMT but now it's some other brand and I can't bend it.

Maybe I'm just a wiener anymore.

Stick another piece of pipe in the handle of the bender, and have a freind put some pressure down on it, while you dial it in....make sure you use deoderant!! and dont eat beans !!

PLENTY OF FOOT PRESSURE MIND YOU>......

i weigh 220 and i have no problem with a hand bender for 1 1/4 emt, just make sure you put the end of the pipe against the wall

Thanks for the compliment... I ran 1.25" conduit for about 2 months straight: data stubs out of the concrete. I got really good at bending offsets by hand with this particular tool. It took firm pressure on the shoe to keep the bend from doing the ripple.

:cool:IMO, the Ideal hand bender is the better tool compared to the others on the market. It has the foot platen that changes position when you get closer to 90 degrees.

If you are slender in the least bit, may I suggest taking the end of the conduit, away from the bender, and scooting it up against the wall to keep the conduit from sliding all over.

Thank you all for for the replys.
looks like i'll go with a ideal ductile bender and 2 boxes of wheeties and 1 goat(1 box for me and 1 for the goat)since i weight in at 185lbs w/out tools the goat should put it over the top.

Combine that with the cheater pipe in the handle and see what happens eh? If all else fails I can hook a mule on to the bender. I'll see how it goes next time that comes up. :D

Seriously though, offsets, kicks and that aren't so bad. It's just like some of the people in here have already said it gets fun when you start trying to bend those 90's.
