I had a job walk today for some work we're starting in an existing boiler room next week. The site maintenance guy was showing me around and we came across this install. I wish I would've taken more pictures. But it's a nice overall looking install. It appears to be two 120V circuits feeding some new flow meter controllers.Whoever installed this obviously modified a C to a T. No splices in the body. The maintenance guy went on a little tangent about how it's out of code. But he didn't say a word about how nice the conduit work was after the flex. I mean this is an old boiler room, and if he wants to be picky, there were multiple violations in this room. Open KOs in Jboxes, opened boxes with live 480V wires hanging out (capped off, but still), conduits not supported within 3' or 10'. It was just funny that out of all the nastiness in that place, that was the one thing he singled out.
It got me thinking though, is modifying a condulet really that big a deal? I know I've turned Cs into Ts a few times in my career for both class 1 and 2 wiring and I've never thought twice about it.
